Law enforcement duties within Centralia are divided between several police services, primarily the Royal Centralia Police Service, municipal police services, and the Royal Highway Patrol.

The most prominent Centralian police officer is ConstablePayne, who curiously seems to be present wherever PrincessAlice goes.

Regulations

All police services in Centralia operate under the regulations of the MinistryOfPublicSafety. To make police officers easier for the public to identify, the Ministry of Public Safety lays out certain requirements that all law enforcement agencies employing uniformed officers must observe.

Titles and ranks

The hierarchy of law enforcement agencies in Centralia is intentionally structured to avoid the use of military ranks such as officer, trooper, or sergeant. The lowest rank in Centralian police agencies is constable, with higher ranks including inspector, superintendent, and commissioner.

Uniforms

The standard Centralia police uniform comprises a white dress shirt, black skirt or black dress pants, and a white peaked cap with a black brim. The badges or emblems on the uniforms vary by agency, but are required to include the circled-star emblem from the national flag of Centralia. The word POLICE must be displayed on all uniforms, as well as the officer's name.

Equipment

Police officers in Centralia do not carry firearms. Certain officers with training in tactical magic techniques are empowered to carry magic wands, though the use of magic is considered a "last resort" and is heavily discouraged except when employed in direct defense of life.

Vehicles

Marked police vehicles must be painted in the standard black and white color scheme and marked with the word POLICE and the name of the operating agency. Marked police vehicles must be equipped with flashing blue lights, at least one of which must be mounted on the roof of the vehicle, as well as an emergency siren.

Unmarked vehicles equipped with flashing blue lights may be used for traffic enforcement, but an officer conducting a traffic stop in an unmarked vehicle is required to call an officer in a marked vehicle to the scene as quickly as is practical and safe.

Agencies

Royal Centralia Police Service

The Royal Centralia Police Service (RCPS) is the national law enforcement agency of Centralia. The RCPS has nationwide jurisdiction, but is primarily responsible for providing police services to unincorporated areas, municipalities with a population less than 100,000, and Crown properties within larger municipalities.

Municipal police services

Under Centralia law, municipalities with a population of 100,000 or more are required to operate their own police services. Examples include Colerain, SunsetValley, and ButtercupBay. Additionally, QueenCity, while formally considered a special prefecture rather than a municipality, operates its own police service, the Queen City Metropolitan Police.

Municipal police services may call on the RCPS for assistance, for example, in response to a major incident, or for crowd control duties for a large planned event.

Royal Highway Patrol

The Royal Highway Patrol is the police agency responsible for traffic safety in Centralia. While Highway Patrol constables are granted full police authority, their primary duties are to enforce traffic codes and respond to motor vehicle accidents. The Royal Highway Patrol also coordinates with the CentraliaHonorGuard to provide motor vehicle escorts for PrincessAlice, other members of the royal household, and foreign dignitaries.
