Grand Central Parkway's southern section, built from Fifth Avenue north to Eleventh Avenue over the right-of way of the existing Cemetery Street, opened to traffic in the mid 1940s. Due to the proximity of Leawood Cemetery, the second section of Grand Central Parkway, opened in the late 1940s, was built on a new right-of-way between Eleventh and Sixteenth Avenues. The the most recent section, north of Sixteenth Avenue, follows the right-of-way of the existing Parker Avenue and was not opened until 1960. Grand Central Parkway was constructed concurrently with the expansion of the Sherbet Shopping District. The southern portion of Grand Central Parkway replaced the former Cemetery Street, while the northern portion replaced the former Chittenden Street. A short stretch of parkway was constructed along a new alignment to connect the two existing alignments and bypass the nearby Bixby Cemetery. Short portions of both Cemetery Street and Chittenden Street still exist, discontinuous from Grand Central Parkway.

In May 2017, a construction project began to replace water and sewer lines along the portion of Grand Central Parkway between Sixth Avenue and Lincoln Park Boulevard, many of which dated back to the original construction of Cemetery Street. The project was completed in October 2018.
