Grand Central Parkway is a major thoroughfare northeast of Downtown QueenCity, now designated as part of CentraliaHighway8.

History

Grand Central Parkway's first section, built from Fifth Avenue north to Eleventh Avenue over the right-of way of the existing Cemetery Street, opened to traffic in the mid 1940s. Due to the proximity of Leawood Cemetery, the second section of Grand Central Parkway, opened in the late 1940s, was built on a new right-of-way between Eleventh and Sixteenth Avenues. The the most recent section, north of Sixteenth Avenue, follows the right-of-way of the existing Parker Avenue and was not opened until 1960.

In May 2017, a construction project began to replace water and sewer lines along the portion of Grand Central Parkway between Sixth Avenue and Lincoln Park Boulevard, many of which dated back to the original construction of Cemetery Street. The project is expected to be completed in October 2018.
