<Calica> So, I've got a start for all of you, who wants to go first?
<Myrdradek> Does anyone here really want to go first, or should we decide randomly?
<Yarrun> randomly works
<Calica> true
<Calica> +shuffle Christa|David|Helena|Zachary
<rollermine> Calica: Christa|Zachary|Helena|David
<Myrdradek> He who laughs last, laughs longest
<Calica> Icon: Alright, you're up first.
<Icon> Mkay.

<Yarrun> hey, gator
<ProfGator> nyello
<ProfGator> I come to spectate
<Calica> So, we started off with your most valuable sorcery notebook stolen by someone who looks, basically, like Zachary.
<Yarrun> Two handsome devils in the same town? I know, shocking
<Calica> Do you want to roleplay a conversation with Ruo or anything about it, or do you want to go straight to your gameplan for finding this guy?
<Icon> Latter.
<Calica> Alright, so what is your gameplan for finding this guy?
<Myrdradek> Hey Calica, is there a place we can check our Demons's powers easily?
<Myrdradek> Sorry for being offtopic
<Icon> Straight up charge him down? I don't want to say stalk though it seems most accurate, assuming she saw him leave and such.

<Anonus> hopy shit this is the first time I've been in this channel since October 12!
<Calica> Anonus: please be quiet if you're going to spectate
<Anonus> ok
<Calica> Anonus: like, comment on the game, but aside from that
<Calica> Icon: Okay, one second, I was kind of going on "you just saw him disappear" but if you want to go hard like this I can do so
<Icon> If she isn't going hard, then really, someone else is. :p
<Icon> (But yeah I do.)

<Calica> Okay, so Zachary just ran out of the hallway of your apartment, you're going to have to chase him down.
<Calica> Roll your Stamina.
<Icon> 2d20?
<Calica> yeah
<Icon> +roll 2d20
<rollermine> Icon: (20+14)=34
<Calica> @dice roll 5d20 >! surprise, it's not Zachary
<Omnipresence> : Rolled 1 4 4 15 20 = 44.
<CentralAvenue> (So how does this work when the highest dice is a tie?)
<Icon> (I think you go by the second highest, i.e. 15/14?)
<Calica> they're both removed, so it's now 15 vs 14
<CentralAvenue> (ah, makes sense)
<Calica> "Zachary" gets one victory, also I think we should be using the "combat" mechanics which I'm actually still not great on
<Icon> (I'm on that chapter.)
<Calica> Roughly, I think Ruo should've been able to do an action there too.
<Calica> Oh well
<Calica> At any rate
<Icon> (I'm also still understanding it, sorry.)
<Calica> The thief begins to put some distance between himself and Christa; if she doesn't do something, her book will be well out of her reach.
<Icon> (Just to clarify, you can't like just do certain reasonable magic short of bringing out the demons, right?)
<Calica> (the only magic you have is summoning demons)
<Myrdradek> Yeah, it's like Bartimaeus if you've ever read that
<Icon> (I have and I loved the heck outta it Myr.)
<Icon> Hrm. Then because she's not super athletic it's either give up or let Ruo out to give her a boost, unless I'm mistaken? :I
<Calica> Pretty much.
<Icon> Christa lets Ruo out, then.
<Calica> sorry, I'm trying to make sure I figure out what the rolls are for, etc
<Icon> Mhm.
<Calica> that said, Ruo's already in your shadow, what are you saying to him?
<Icon> "Ruo! Stop h-" Before Christa could get the words out, Ruo was already at the ready. With the first wailing echo a garish apparition escaped from Christa's shadow and darted towards the thief.
<Icon> (Was that too much chatter?)
<Calica> that wasn't enough chatter
<Calica> you didn't need to cut off your line
<Icon> (Ah see I read in the manual about not overdoing it... but right, right.)
<Calica> Also in general don't cut off because 1) order is established by the dice 2) I'm playing Ruo
<Icon> (Noted, sorry!)
<Icon> (Forgot about the GMs doing that. >_>)
<Calica> I'm not going to count that as a turn because I screwed up so much already this first conflict, just do this:
<Calica> Ruo's intent: chase after the thief, get back the master's book
<Icon> So just orders, got it.
<Calica> Thief's intent: Try to turn these corners and make a break for it
<Calica> @dice roll 5d20 >! Ruo's stamina
<Omnipresence> : Rolled 3 11 11 13 14 = 52.
<Calica> @dice roll 5d20 1d20 >! Thief's stamina + 1 for previous victory
<Omnipresence> : Rolled 4 11 13 16 16 19 = 79.
<Icon> @_@
<CentralAvenue> (truck coming in)
<Calica> The thief manages to push off a wall and barrel down the stairs before Ruo even really has a chance to catch him.
<Myrdradek> Little did Christa know her book had been stolen by Usain Bolt
<Yarrun> And now I'm laughing at the fact that I changed Zach from Jewish to black
<CentralAvenue> (i'm back)
<Calica> Christa can hear Ruo still trying to make chase with the assailant in the lobby of her apartment building; seeing his options narrow, Christa knows Ruo is probably going to launch his psychic pulse.
<Calica> Ruo will, of course, pay no matter to the damage the force pulse will cause to the lobby of the apartment. Will Christa?
<Icon> (Is that rhetorical, or? Not sure how you want me to respond.)
<Calica> Icon: That's a "do you want to call Ruo back"
<Calica> or rather, try to call Ruo back
<Calica> (sorry this is taking so long, everyone >_<)
<CentralAvenue> (it's cool)
<Calica> Icon: remember, at this stage just intent
<Icon> (I'm sure the force pulse will result in destruction and therefore a Humanity hit. So, uh.)
<Calica> (destruction and also harming a human. hadn't decided if I was gonna do a humanity roll but)
<Icon> (I'm mostly concerned because potentially going down to 1 is Not Good; like just for long-term "playing this game" stuff. But, really, I don't see her pulling away?)
<Icon> (Hence my not-immediate response.)
<Calica> just pick, yes or no
<Icon> Mmm. No.
<Calica> alrighty
<Calica> @dice roll 6d20 >! Ruo's Will for Psychic Force attack
<Omnipresence> : Rolled 3 3 4 5 10 11 = 36.
<Calica> @dice roll 3d20 3d20 >! Thief's Will + bonus
<Omnipresence> : Rolled 8 9 9 14 18 18 = 76.
<Calica> Ruo's blast knocks down the front door of the apartment complex, but before it could even get close to the thief, he seemed to vanish into thin air.
<Yarrun> Man, my clone's doing much better than I would have done
<Calica> I'm not going to do any Humanity rolls, though I might've had the thief taken damage
<Myrdradek> "You've destroyed the door and lost a vital part of yourself"
<Calica> Ruo returns to Christa's side. "He got away, though it sure was pretty seeing the front of the building collapse."
<Icon> Christa shivers as his words vibrate through her body, slowly calling him back into her shadow before falling slumped onto the ground. She mumbles something incoherently to him, at a loss for words.
<Calica> "It's not like he disappeared forever, you know. We can probably find him again."
<Icon> "I... fucking, of course we can, but he's still gone!" Christa shouts at the air, forcing herself to stand up as if she were talking directly to him. Tears start to form before she quickly wipes them away, not seeking to cuase a scene. "Listen. We're just going to go back, for now... do you have any idea what he looked like?"
<Calica> Back in Christa's apartment, Ruo knocks down an empty notebook and sketches a figure.
<Calica> "This is who we're after."
<Icon> She quietly thanks him under her breath, before tearing open the page and placing it in her carry-around journal. Several minutes are taken for her to gather herself. "And he's not going to get away, yes?"
<Calica> "I'll destroy him next time. I just need more blood. Yes. More life. Expose more life."
<Calica> Okay, Zachary's next on the list but I'm going to skip to Helena because she's the one with the tightest schedule.
<Yarrun> fair
<CentralAvenue> :D
<Calica> (We can deal with things like Ruo's Need later too)
<Calica> Okay, so Helena's Kicker is that her co-worker just died.
<Calica> and that she's a suspect.
<Icon> (Bring out your inner irrationality, Centie.)
<Calica> She's just been called in by Peter Phipps, the billionaire real estate developer whose name would be on her paychecks if they were actually, you know, checks.
<CentralAvenue> "This can't be happening! Oh god oh god oh god..."
<Calica> The Phipps Tower receptionist walks over to Helena. "You must be Ms. George?"
<CentralAvenue> "Y-yes..."
<Calica> "Mr. Phipps is ready to see you. Just go into the elevator and head up to floor 37. And just a warning, he's a bit...eccentric."
<CentralAvenue> (truck >_<)
Medicine has quit IRC (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
<Myrdradek> While she's gone, I should probably ask if we should have our demon's powers written down
<Calica> Anyways, CentralAvenue, are you going to head up?
<CentralAvenue> Helena heads for the elevator, mumbling to herself the whole time. "This can't be real...This can't be happening..." She knows better than to be carrying a weapon in plain view, but she's got a special surprise tucked away in her purse in case she ever needs it.
<CentralAvenue> (lol I was typing)
<Calica> ah
<Calica> The elevator itself is decorated with ads for Phipps real estate with the obnoxiously-saccharine "Employee Code"
<Calica> Helena reaches the 37th floor. Much of the floor is a bizarre, disoriented spiralling hallway with every wall a mirror, but she finally makes it to Peter Phipps's office.
<CentralAvenue> Helena knocks quietly on the office door, still in denial about why she's come here.
<Calica> "Come in, come in!" Peter's voice is full of energy.
<CentralAvenue> Helena doesn't make eye contact, but is busy staring down at her purse. "H-hi...Mr. Phipps..."
<Calica> "Hello Helena! I'm sure you've already heard about the unfortunate death of Mr. Brooks. Now, I've had to rearrange all my security teams to cover this up, so right now, I have no regular position for you..."
Juan has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving.)
<CentralAvenue> Helena tries desperately to keep her compsure. "Yes, uh, how...how unfortunate...about Mr. Brooks..."
<Calica> "How would you like a special position, reporting directly to me?"
<CentralAvenue> Helena is a bit suspicous--granted, Helena tends to be suspicious about almost everyting, but this time she was *especially* suspicious. This wasn't the kind of conversation she'd been expecting at all. "What kind of position, sir?"
<Calica> "Whatever I need you to do, really. Investigation, protection, courier, it varies. Basically, whenever I don't want the fucking Board of Directors breathing down my back, I'll send you."
<CentralAvenue> Helena was torn. This certainly didn't sound like conventional security work, but...well, in her position, what choice did she have? It was either accept the offer or take the fall for Brooks's murder. "Yes. I accept your offer."
<Calica> "Brilliant!"
<CentralAvenue> Helena wasn't sure what to say. "So, uh...when do I start?"
<Calica> Peter scribbles down an address. "I have a contact in the police department, and there's some evidence I'd like in my hands instead of theirs. Go to this drop spot and...purchase it from her, if you can. Remember, though, that there is a limit to the charges I can get you out of."
<CentralAvenue> Helena takes the paper. I should probably have more qualms about this, she thinks to herself, but I never did trust the government (police included) and if it will keep me out of jail... "I'm on it, sir!"
<Calica> He then goes to his phone. "Diane, give Helena here a briefcase and tell Tokio Rose to be at our usual spot at 7:30."
eriophora has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 378 seconds)
<CentralAvenue> (I suppose Helena should go meet with Tokio Rose now?)
<Calica> yeah
<Calica> FFWD>>
<Calica> Helena and "Tokio Rose", the police informant, are face-to-face in a dark alleyway.
<Calica> "So you're Peter's new dog..."
<CentralAvenue> (goddammit another truck)
<CentralAvenue> ok back
<CentralAvenue> "I...I guess you could say that." This line of work was new to Helena, she had no idea how to carry on a conversation like this.
<Calica> "I assume you have the money, yes?"
<CentralAvenue> Helena may be new to this, but she wasn't stupid. "Of course I do. But first let's see the package."
<Calica> "Rose" pulls out a briefcase of her own, labeled "POLICE EVIDENCE MELMOTH" followed by an ID number.
<CentralAvenue> "Arlight, alright." Helena pulls out the briefcase Phipps provided her earlier. "This what you're looking for?"
<Calica> "Open it."
<CentralAvenue> Helena tries her best to pull some sleight of hand, opening the suitcase with her left hand in such a way as to block the view of her gripping Ampere in her jacket with her right hand. But she has no idea whether or not that works.
<Calica> "Not enough."
<CentralAvenue> "Oh, COME ON!" Helena thinks she lost her cool there. >_<
<CentralAvenue> "I knew it. This is a setup, isn't it? You're in on it, trying to frame me!"
<Calica> "I just know Peter has more than that, the fuckin' cheapskate."
<CentralAvenue> "Well, well...what do you want ME to do about it, eh? He's hardly gonna listen to me if I go and say 'she wants more!' I'm just a pawn in his little game! And not the cool kind of pawn where you like move to the other end of the board and become a queen. I haven't even left my starting position. NOW HAND IT OVER!!"
<Calica> CentralAvenue: Roll Will.
<CentralAvenue> you can probably remind me how many will i have in the time it takes me to pull up the character sheet #unprepared
<CentralAvenue> (ok ,got the sheet up now anyways)
<Calica> @dice roll 4d20 >! "Rose"'s Will
<Omnipresence> : Rolled 5 10 14 19 = 48.
Juan has joined #madokamadness
<Calica> 2 for "Rose".
<Calica> "Don't even give me that shit. If you want the evidence, call Peter now and have him promise me twice this."
<Calica> Meanwhile, Ampere whispers in Helena's ear:
<Calica> "Her neck looks awfully nice..."
<CentralAvenue> "Alright, alright," Helena closes the briefcase and sets it down. "Let me just grab my cell phone..."
<CentralAvenue> But of course she isn't reaching for a phone.
<CentralAvenue> She's reaching for Ampere.
<CentralAvenue> "Ampere, get the briefcase!"
<CentralAvenue> (Truuuuck)
<Calica> Rose is caught off guard as a net of electricity closes around the briefcase. "What the shit?"
<Calica> This is combat. Rose's first action is going to be to pull out a handgun.
<CentralAvenue> (back)
<CentralAvenue> "Ampere, stop her! I don't care how!"
<Calica> Ampere's first action is to "throw" the evidence suitcase behind Helena.
<Calica> Second round:
<Calica> Ampere hears Helena's command; its contacts begin to flash rapidly, sending a low-level electrical jolt through Rose designed to scramble her nervous system.
<Calica> s/sending/in preparation to send
<Calica> Rose is going to try to fire her gun off rapidly at the bizarre monster who Peter has found as her dog.
<Calica> CentralAvenue: What does Helena want to do?
<CentralAvenue> Helena's gonna go ahead and let Ampere do his thing, since her life is on the line here and she doesn't really have a lot of options
<Calica> okay then
<Calica> @dice roll 5d20 >! Ampere's Power
<Omnipresence> : Rolled 2 6 10 11 12 = 41.
<Calica> @dice roll 2d20 >! Rose's Stamina, decreased by 2 for rapid fire, plus one for a weapon
<Omnipresence> : Rolled 6 12 = 18.
<Calica> Ampere goes first, and this is Confusion, so it's a roll against her Will, which is 4, so she gets 2 more dice
<Calica> Also there's 2 victories she didn't roll over but I'm not sure how long rollover victories are supposed to last?
<Calica> @dice roll 2d20
<Omnipresence> Calica: Rolled 7 14 = 21.
<CentralAvenue> (what an Iconic roll, hee hee)
<Calica> She gets a 14, which means she avoids the Confusion
<Calica> Her four dice in play are 6 7 12 14
<Calica> Since Helena tried to stand back, I'm going to give her the 2-die Total Defense bonus, as well as 2 dice because Rose should only have two, so roll Stamina+4, CentralAvenue
<Calica> Yarrun, Myrdradek: Sorry if I don't get to one or both of you by the end of the session. For what it's worth, the Sorcerer manual mentions first sessions going slower than usual.
<Yarrun> Noted
<Myrdradek> Makes sense
<Myrdradek> Yarrun would you be okay with ending after Centie is done? I wanna go to sleep relatively soon
<CentralAvenue> does stamina+4 mean 2d20+4 or 6d20? (stupid question, i know, but)
<Calica> Myrdradek: I was thinking of having your turn next since Centie ends at 9 and there's a tiny chance Helena will show up in David's storyline but if anyone shows up in Zachary's it's most likely to be Christa (tonight, that is)
<Myrdradek> Ah
<Myrdradek> So would it be inconvenient to end after Centie anyway?
<Calica> Myrdradek: Nah, ending after Centie would work just as well if that's what everyone wants to do
<Myrdradek> Thank you
<Calica> and then we can start yours and Zach's storylines maybe Wed or Thurs?
<CentralAvenue> honestly i've only got an hour left right now anyway so ending after centie might be for the best anyways
<Myrdradek> Sure
<Calica> Rose fires, and the ill-aimed shot zooms right past Helena's cheek.
<Icon> I'm fine regardless
<Yarrun> I did kind of want to get mine squared away tonight
<Calica> Yarrun: We could possibly do that if you wanted to go past CentralAvenue having to leave; otherwise I think the best bet is to wait
<CentralAvenue> I feel bad that my scheduling has become a blocking issue for us... >_<
<Calica> CentralAvenue: scheduling always sucks
<Calica> CentralAvenue: and honestly sessions past 4 hours are probably a bad idea anyways
<Calica> Anyways, Round 3:
<Calica> Rose, this time, is going to try to aim her gun and properly shoot Helena; that's her action this round
<Yarrun> Would you mind if we finished up mine tonight and sent you the cliff notes, Centie?
<CentralAvenue> Yarrun: that'd be ok with me, but you'd have to ask Myrdradek since he wanted to go to bed
<Myrdradek> If we do, is it okay if I leave too? Since I'm more likely to show up in Central's story than Zacharie's
<Calica> Ampere is switching his plans: instead of trying to attack Rose, he's going to turn his electricity to the form that empowers Helena instead
<Calica> Myrdradek: Yeah, that's fine. I'll get logs up.
<Calica> CentralAvenue: Does Helena want to clock Rose yet?
<CentralAvenue> aaah trucks coming in, give me a sec
<Calica> @dice roll 5d20 >! Ampere's Power for Boost
<Omnipresence> : Rolled 4 7 10 10 14 = 45.
<Calica> @dice roll 3d20 >! Rose's Stamina
<Omnipresence> : Rolled 2 17 19 = 38.
<Calica> The Boost came in under your top die, so it doesn't apply until after, but those dice do apply to your next roll
<Calica> ...or rather, they would, except that Rose is giving up.
<Calica> "I don't know what the fuck you are or why Peter even needs this shit when he's got someone like you as his fucking errand-girl, but I'll take your shitty offer if you don't hurt me anymore."
<Calica> Rose coughs up, and then spits out onto the wall, blood.
<Calica> (too bad Christa isn't here XDDDDD)
<CentralAvenue> "Ampere, stand down. It's time we got the fuck out of here, and fast."
<Icon> (Pffft.)
<Calica> Ampere sputters out. "Are you sure we can't grab her neck, steal her breath for just a second?"
<CentralAvenue> "We're in enough trouble as is! Let's just run while we still can."
<Calica> I'm guessing you're going to grab that evidence suitcase, at least, though
<CentralAvenue> Naturally. Helena thrusts the money suitcase towards Rose, then grabs the evidence one.

<Calica> Alright, so now it's Zachary's turn.
<Yarrun> Right
<Calica> So your Kicker is that you're starting to hear reports of thefts you performed except for the part that you hadn't done any of them
<Calica> And you've heard reports about another sorcerer wanting your head
<Yarrun> Yeah
<Calica> So what's Zachary's next move?
<Calica> wait, I forgot to get clothes out of the laundry, brb
<Yarrun> "Okay, so clearly there's no way we can let this guy keep working. We have enough people chasing us as it is."
<Yarrun> He said as he ate cereal in his rundown apartment
<Calica> back
<Yarrun> "We know he hit another sorcerer, and that's probably not a coincidence, so maybe we go check the covens and see if we can pick his next target"
<Yarrun> "Any complaints, Felix?"
<Calica> "Well, I never have a problem with people being more confused, even you, Master, but if you say it needs to be stopped, it needs to be stopped."
<Yarrun> Zachary pats the watch lightly
<Calica> "And if you think the covens would know best, they would know best."
<Yarrun> "If this pans out in our favor, I'm taking you to see that stupid comedy movie three times in a row."
<Calica> true suffering: i'm pretty sure the most recent big stupid comedy movie to come out is ted
<Calica> "I'll remember that!"

<Calica> yeah

<IllFlower> PLAGIARISM

eriophora has joined #madokamadness
<IllFlower> Wouldn't maximum irony be a church in active use?
<Calica> Zachary steps into the church, waiting for the head of the coven to step out.
<Yarrun> He tries to blend into the shadows as much as possible
<Calica> IllFlower: They have to balance their foundational principle with the economic realities of being a minor coven in the modern day
<Calica> The head of the coven, a middle-aged woman, steps out and immediately notices Zachary.
<Calica> "Zachary! How have you been? You never call!"
<IllFlower> Calica: I'm going to assume that's fancy talk for "only so much irony to go around."
<Yarrun> Zachary smiles wryly and stretches out a hand for a handshake
<Yarrun> (So much irony and so much money)
<Calica> IllFlower: It's fancy talk for "They'd get kicked out of an active church."
<Calica> "So what are you here for? Trying to ride out the cops?"
<IllFlower> Calica: Just tell them it's a Saturday Latin school.
<Yarrun> Zachary picks his words carefully
<Yarrun> "No, not hiding this time around. I need information. On valuables and...doubles."
<Calica> "Doubles? Are you trying to rob a movie star or something?"
<Yarrun> Zachary quietly broke out in a cold sweat.
<Yarrun> "Rob? No, no robbing. Just..."
<Calica> "I didn't think book theft was your style anyways."
<Calica> "The way it happened seemed odd to me too. Not...fun enough."
<Yarrun> "...I'm not fun" he said brusquely. "But yes, you've got the right idea."
<Yarrun> (Zachary is a serious man with serious issues)
<Calica> "So you're trying to track down this imitation Zachary Weil?"
<Yarrun> "Last thing I need is more heat on me. And to be fair, I could probably make use of his loot."
<Calica> (relatedly: how am I supposed to pronounce "Weil"? There's a mathematician Weil, prononuced "vay", but I think that might be an odd French thing?)
<Yarrun> (I've been pronouncing it like "while", but with a German w, so it sounds closer to "vile)
<Icon> (Go me, also darn you Zachary.)

<Calica> "To be honest, I have no idea what your double is planning. He's going for books, so he probably wants knowledge."
<Yarrun> "So, more or less like me then."
<IllFlower> Knowledge... or kindling.
<Yarrun> "Except better, because he's wrung more out of this city in a few weeks than I have in the past few years"
<Calica> "There's one place he hasn't struck yet, though."
<Yarrun> "Hm?"
<Calica> "The private collection at the University Library. Probably the biggest sorcerous cache in the state, and the owners don't even fucking care! I bet the thief's working his way up, though."
<Yarrun> "Huh. Why haven't I hit that one up again?"
Juan has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving.)
<Calica> "Have you ever tried to navigate the buildings there? You'd get lost twice before you even found the library!"
<Yarrun> "Oh? I think I have a bit more confidence in myself than that."
<Yarrun> "...though if you want to come along to help me on my way, I won't argue."
<Calica> "You say that like I have any more knowledge of the place than you do!"
<Calica> "But yeah, if I had to guess where they'd strike next, that's where I'd go."
<Yarrun> "Still, wouldn't mind some backup. The Other Guy seems a lot more aggressive than me. Might be trouble."
<Calica> "The Other Guy is the least of your worries, to be honest. You remember the guy you got that watch from?"
<Yarrun> "Zed? What about him?"
<Icon> (It amuses me how they don't even care who the book got stolen from, even if it makes total sense.)
<Calica> "Well, one of the splinters, one of the ones that didn't care about you, set up shop around here a couple weeks before 'you' started stealing. They're a nasty bunch."
<Calica> "We have to pay them protection money, just to squat here! Us!"
<Yarrun> Zachary does his best to feign concern
<Yarrun> Black Mass Coven's been good to him, but if Zed's guys are hanging around, then he shouldn't be anywhere close to them
<Calica> "But if you want, I can at least try to help you find the library. Can't really promise much power from my old body, though."

<Calica> The librarian asks: "Is there anything you're looking for?"
<Yarrun> "One of the private collections, I believe."
<Calica> "Which one? There are a lot."
<Yarrun> "...Have any of them been asked about in the last few days?"
<Calica> "...I wouldn't know. Most of them are obscure history, philosophy, that sort of things, that are donated to the school."
